That AREA HAS BEEN PICKED CLEAN OR HAS IT?
BY JACK J. ROMANO
On the way home last Saturday, I was passing an area cleared of houses, this area used to be part of Old Navy Housing for Bremerton Naval Base in Bremerton, Washington. The ground had been bulldozed and a lot of clear dirt was visible. So I stopped and got out my detector, a Garrett GTA1000, which I carry in my truck at all times. Anyway I started swinging, hit a contact, nice and clear, and dug up a penny. Nothing really to get excited about, but, I will dig up any find. I hit another penny about 5 minutes later, a 1993. Oh well, but on my third hit, I dug up a really dirty penny that was badly corroded. But I could tell it was a wheatie, so I put it in my pocket and continued on. Well, a women came by, on her way to somewhere, I did not ask, but she knew what I was doing, asked me if I had found anything. I told her not much, just a few pennies, she informed me that the area had been picked clean many times before I got there. I thanked her, said I liked the exercise, and continued on, knowing that all those before me missed that one wheat penny in my pocket. It turned out to be a 1920 s penny. Not a fantastic find, but I was happy finding it, in that PICKED CLEAN AREA.
